ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

As a NZ owned and operated company since 1979, Connect NZ recognises the unique qualities we are privileged to enjoy through working and living in New Zealand.

The stakeholders share a managerial belief in a two part approach to environmental responsibility - firstly, a commitment to delivering back to society real value in return for the resources we have utilised and secondly, a recognition of our responsibilities to maintain the well-being of our people, our customers and our environment.

In particular we undertake to:

Educate and train employees to be aware of relevant environmental issues

Continually improve our efficient use of natural resources, especially electricity, paper and packaging materials through reduction and recycling

Apply best practices to health & Safety concerns, handling of hazardous substances and waste disposal

Continually monitor the effectiveness of our Global Brand Partners efforts to manage product life cycle and to demonstrate sustainable manufacturing processes

EMPLOYEE COMMITMENT

Connect's success depends on a continuing ability to place motivated, ethical and skilled people inside our customer premises.  Underpinned by our mantra of "Recruit, Retain, Reward", our policies strive to create a stimulating environment that encourages employee well-being and loyalty.

We provide:

  CNZ Health & Safety Policy

Best Practice Schedules for key roles and processes

Continual review of Job Description + KPI's

  Our unique Leadership mentoring program

Board approved succession planning and commitment to "Next-Gen" leadership

Commitment to health and fitness eg teams entered into the Round Lake Taupo relay for last 10x consecutive years

GOOD CITIZENSHIP

Our pride in being New Zealand owned and operated company underpins a belief, shared by stakeholders and employees, that a continual contribution to the well-being of the society in which we operate, is simply good business.

Some of our current contributory activity includes:

  • Sponsor of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra
  • Sponsor of the Kauri 2000 Trust, with employees allowed paid work time to participate in the reforestation of the Coromandel Peninsula
  • Key CNZ stakeholders have been actively involved since 1990 in forestry planting projects, both exotic and native, in Gisbourne and the Coromandel
  • Sponsor of the Kuaotunu Kiwi Sanctuary
  • Sponsor of Grammer Carlton Under 19 Rugby team

RESPONSIBLE SUPPLIER PARTNERSHIPS

As the "interface" between Global Manufacturers and our NZ based customers, Connect NZ can and does positively impact on environmental sustainability considerations in two ways.

  1. We work actively with our customers during their purchase processes to ensure full consideration is given to resource efficiency eg. Use of MFD's, Energy Star awareness, etc
  2. Monitor suppliers commitment to sustainable manufacturing and choose where we purchase with these factors as a key criteria.

Panasonic - Matsushita established its landmark "Environmental Charter" in 1991.  Presented Energy Star award by EPA in 1999.  Latest is its "Green Plan 2010" which mandates targets for clean factory certification, 90% of all products "Green Rated" by 2011 and an initiative to assist households to realise "Green House Gas Factor 5" by 2011.

Hewlett Packard - 2002 became first electronics company to establish its Supply Chain Social & Environmental Responsibility Policy.  2004 HP helped develop the Electric Identity Code of Conduct (EICC) which sets guidelines for operational practices in labour, human rights, health & safety and the environment.

HP PC's meet Energy Star 4.0 requirements and leads industry in EPEAT - Gold products.

HP innovates in "Closed Loop" Inkjet cartridge recycling.

Avaya - All Avaya products introduced since August 2005 meet EU provisions for Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment.  (WEEE)

Products comply with EU Directive on restriction of use of certain hazardous substances.  (ROHS)

WHAT ARE WE DOING?

Progressively replacing our older 2.0 litre wagons with smaller 1.4 litre vehicles for all our engineers for vastly reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Implementing Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority (EECA) guidelines and recommendations within all Connect premises to reduce energy usage.

Recycle all cardboard packaging

CNZ has a significant shareholding in a company, ComX Ltd, which specialises in the refurbishment and recycling of Telecommunication equipment

Recycle and reuse paper internally where double siding has not been enforced.

Our local contribution to product stewardship is to work with local recyclers to achieve zero landfill in componentry, PCB's and toner cartridges.
